Tin Can Bay and Rainbow beach

Friday 1st July 2022

We found out yesterday that there was dolphin feeding near the dingy dock at 7am. It started back in the 1970s when an injured dolphin nicknamed Scarry was in Snapper creek and a fisherman decided to feed it until it recovered. She would return daily along with other dolphins to be hand fed and this continues today although scarry would be well into her 50s. How long do dolphins live?

Anyway we decided to head in and see for ourselves. Unfortunately it is school holidays so there were heaps of kids lined up to feed the dolphins so we just grabbed a cup of tea and had a chat to the locals about fishing and bait nets and good anchorages on K’gari. The dolphins did show although a bit later than advertised at least the kids weren’t disappointed. We saw them from our dingy when we were leaving and look forward to seeing more as we head up the straits near K’Gari where they often come to play.

We picked up some fresh prawns for dinner and headed back to Nauti Kitty. Rick had a fish while I started my next painting project and worked on the blog for the rest of the day.

Planning a bike ride to a market in the next town tomorrow if this rain stops?

Saturday 2nd July 2022

So the rain has set in so no bike ride today but we did brave getting wet to head into the Tin Can Bay Yacht Club where we sat out on the verandah and watched the local dragon boat regatta taking place right out the front while we had buffalo wings and chippies with drinks.

The dragon boat course looked extremely challenging requiring sharp turns around bouys. The person steering at the back has to have great timing and usually they have drummers in the front that beat the drum to help rowers keep the rhythm but none of these boats had the drummer on board today. Great entertainment.

Just spent rest of a very rainy day onboard doing some painting, work, reading.

Yay a break in the weather today allowed us to go exploring. We took Little Puss over to Carlo Point then Walked to the other side of the peninsula (about 5km) to Rainbow Beach. This was a surprising beachside town well established for tourists. Great group of shops and lots of accommodation centered north of the rainbow sand cliffs of Rainbow beach and Double Island Point. We treated ourselves to ice creams which we ate down on the beach. As it was low tide and vehicles are allowed on this beach it felt a bit cramped as it was school holidays and a weekend and the first sunny day in awhile so obviously everyone thought a visit here was a good idea. We started heading down toward the rainbow sands and wanted to see the large sand drift that we could actually see from our boat. The sand drift was pretty disappointing as our dunes at shallow inlet are much nicer and these had been well trodden by the numerous holiday makers. The tide was coming in so access down to the rainbow cliffs was difficult. We decided to explore a little more of the foreshore instead and found a nice spot overlooking the beach to have our cuppa we’d brought with us before grabbing a few groceries and doing the 5 km walk back to Little Puss to head back to Nauti Kitty. The Channels in all this area are pretty confusing and just as we got little puss up to speed we suddenly hit a bank and came to a very surprising halt. Fortunately no harm done and we re established where the channel was and limped gently over to it before trying the throttle again. We made it back to Nauti Kitty a little weary and ready for sundowners. Good adventure day.

Monday 4th - Wednesday 6th July 2022

Weather closed on again so spent a few days on board with occasional trip into Tin Can Bay when there was a break in the weather just to stretch our legs. We have a beautiful sunset tonight and looks like weather for tomorrow will make for a lovely day sail to Garry’s Anchorage.
