Blue Water Sailors

Sailing past Cape Shank

Blog 11th March 2022

After we turned left we motored for awhile down toward cape shank moving clear of land to get a good sail run. Then it was up sails turn off the engines and bamm!!! we are now blue water sailors!!!

Only 98 nautical miles to go to our first destination at 5 to 6 knots ( that is about 160 km at 4 km an hour) but hey we are doing it. Our first full over night passage and sailing on the roughest point of sail. They call it ‘beating to windward’ for a reason. Continual bash and crash we thought the boat would break in two but she held firm. Never once did I feel anything but safe and secure on our Nauti Kitty. Despite her old bones complaining she sailed true and sailed well holding her own keeping pace ahead of a monohull that came through the rip with us. And who says catamarans can’t sail up wind!!!

We had very little sleep and could virtually do nothing but sit or stand in one place and hold on! We absolutely froze as the wind, now southerly, felt like it still carried ice from Antarctica. But we loved every minute of it. The beautiful moon lit starry starry night then dawn over Wilsons prom was glorious. The prom scenery as we made our way through the small islands and around the tip of the prom and notorious Prom light house was just amazing. What a wonderful perspective that despite living only 40 minutes away from we had never seen!

We arrived at Refuge Cove around 10.30 am and immediately had some yummy food, a warm shower and Sleep.

It is such a serene and peaceful place here or at least without the tourists it would be. As it’s a long weekend we guess there will be more coming in droves as there have already been 10 boats show up since we arrived so we have decided to head off again tonight and catch this weather window to get to Lakes Entrance. Feeling rested and ready for more.
