Nelson Bay

Beautiful Pelican and not so beautiful weather

Mon May 9th 2022. Nauti Time 064

Headed into Nelson Bay marina today and managed to dock fairly well. It’s getting a bit more comfortable although they did give us an end of arm T to dock on so that made it easier. Spent the day exploring some of the shops and went and voted as the polling booths opened today and we are not sure when our next opportunity would be so all done now.

We have come into the Marina as Rick has a full day training tomorrow and we wanted to make sure powner wasn’t a problem although our solar has been serving us very well and probably would have been enough it is better for it to not even be a concern and as they are not busy we got a great deal. We may even stay an extra day to get some chores done.

Then it’s off to discover all that this beautiful bay has to offer. Some hiking, a trip up the Myall lakes swimming maybe if weather gets warm again (currently raining and cold again!) We will see!

I love pelicans, they make no sense to me at all but I love them!

Have spent last 5 days in the Marina as the weather has been abysmal but the gorgeous pelicans have kept us amused!

We have managed a few lovely walks along the foreshore path that heads to Collette. Today we walked all the way to Salamander Bay shops which was about 10 km return but managed to stick to walking paths most of the way. The vegetation here is so diverse. Firstly the absolutely massive gum trees must have been here from when time began, they make you dizzy when you stand at the base of one and look up.

Massive Gumtree

What I love is it’s not just one or two scattered around but there are mini forests of these giants. The gardens here seem to be able to grow every thing from camillias, hibiscus, frangipani, flax, aloe Vera, bromalids, banana trees, rubber trees, weird starfish like fungi, azaleas, geraniums, black eyed Susan, etc. these are just a few of what we saw!!! Very rich fertile lands and as we are experiencing obviously a very healthy rainfall! We got very wet and steamy and now know why umbrellas seem to be the go here as it’s too hot to wear raincoats. In the end we ditched ours and just put up with being wet!

Beautiful plant and birdlife

Muscle sore and weary tonight so will be early to bed. Weathers on the improve so heading out tomorrow finally to do more on water exploring.
